The grant is in the amount of $6,000, to be used for developing a housing needs assessment. Over the past three years, Community Development Block Grants have proved to be a key resource in the efforts to improve public facilities and revitalize the economies of nonmetropolitan Arizona. REID, ASSISTANT PLANNER SUBJECT: INFORMATION ITEM - SEPTEMBER 2, 1986 AWARD OF 1985 STATE SPECIAL PROJECTS COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT We have received notification from the State CDBG staff that our 1985 Special Project Grant (Planning Grant) has been selected for funding. As you may recall , this project is a housing survey designed to collect informa- tion regarding number, type and quality of housing in Apache Junction. When completed, this report will help the community develop future plans for housing. Our grant award is $6000 which sounds like a very small amount of money. However, .•. this grant is significant for two reasons. 1 ) the timing of this study is critical for our community, and 2) Apache Junction had to compete against all other communities and counties in the state for a total state allocation of $29,000,of which Apache Junction received approximately 20% of these funds. Considering that Apache Junction has less than one half of a percent of the state's total populat-ion)this amount is proportionately very large. Staff has commenced the initial data collection and will be selecting interns from A.S.U. for some of the visual field work in the next couple of weeks. At this time, it is estimated by the Highway Department that construction may begin at the first of the year (1987) . As the project extends from Hawes Road to Meridian Drive and beyond, a detailed construction sequence is not available at this time. This office will continue to coordinate with the County Highway Department in these regards. He further indicated that a letter would be forthcoming on a preconstruction conference and the City would be invited to attend.
