SPECIAL MEETING
APRIL 1,2002
The special meeting of the City Council of the City of Apache Junction,
Arizona,was held on April 1,2002,at the Apache Junction City Council
Chambers pursuant to the notice required by law.
CALL TO ORDER
Mayor Coleman called the meeting to order at 6:50 p.m.
ROLL CALL

Vice Mayor Surra

POSSIBLE ACTION ON ACCEPTANCE OF
RESIGNATION OF CITY MANAGER CURTIS A.
SHOOK;POSSIBLE APPROVAL OF SEVERANCE
AGREEMENT BETWEEN CITY OF APACHE JUNCTION
AND CURTIS A.SHOOK;POSSIBLE ACTION ON
APPOINTMENT OF ASSISTANT CITY MANAGER
GEORGE R.HOFFMAN AS INTERIM CITY MANAGER;
POSSIBLE DIRECTION TO STAFF REGARDING CITY
MANAGER RECRUITMENT PROCESS
)Mayor Coleman called for any
discussion by the council.There being no discussion,he called for a motion.

Vice Mayor Surra commented the city
was fortunate to have had the skilled,competent knowledge and dedicated
service of Mr.Shook as our city manager.The departments have been able to
provide many enhancements to quality of life of our citizens under his
guidance.His fiscal philosophies will make it possible for the city to
survive for many years to come.For reasons not related to his abilities or
his dedication to the community,she MOVED THAT WE ACCEPT HIS RESIGNATION AS
CITY MANAGER EFFECTIVE TODAY.
Councilmember Dietz SECONDED THE
MOTION.
Councilmember Urich requested her
statement be made part of the record."I accept with regret the resignation
of Curtis Shook,our city manager,I vote yes."
VOTE:Unanimous
The motion carried.
Mayor Coleman called for a motion on
the severance agreement.
Councilmember Milkey MOVED THAT WE
APPROVE THE SEVERANCE AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE CITY OF APACHE JUNCTION AND CURTIS
A.SHOOK AS PRESENTED.
Councilmember Dietz SECONDED THE
MOTION.
VOTE:Unanimous.
The motion carried.
Mayor Coleman called for any
discussion on George Hoffman serving as acting city manager.There being no
discussion,he called for a motion.

Councilmember Urich MOVED THAT
ASSISTANT CITY MANAGER GEORGE R.HOFFMAN BE APPOINTED AS INTERIM CITY MANAGER
EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.
Councilmember Dietz SECONDED THE
MOTION.
VOTE:Unanimous.
The motion carried.
Mayor Coleman called for a motion on
the direction to staff regarding the city manager recruitment process.
Vice Mayor Surra commented she would
like to give direction to staff to proceed immediately and return to the
council with the options after they discuss things regarding the recruitment
process they will be using,with any options,and a time frame.She does not
believe George would like to handle this single-handedly for a long time.She
MOVED THAT STAFF BE DIRECTED TO RETURN WITH OPTIONS REGARDING THE CITY MANAGER
RECRUITMENT PROCESS AT THE EARLIEST CONVENIENCE AND A TIME FRAME.
MOTION.
VOTE:Unanimous.
The motion carried.
