AN ORDINANCE OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF APACHE JUNCTION,AMENDING THE CITY OF APACHE JUCTION
POLICE POLICY AND PROCEDURES BY REVISING SECTION 5.87
AUTHORIZED ON DUTY FIREARMS;REPEALING ANY CONFLICTING
PROVISIONS;AND PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
APACHE JUNCTION,ARIZONA,AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION I IN GENERAL
That the City of Apache Junction,Police Policy and Procedures
Section 5.87 Authorized On Duty Firearms,be amended in its entirety,as
follows:
5.87 AUTHORIZED ON DUTY FIREARMS
A.Patrol Division -The authorized on duty firearm will
be the Smith &Wesson Model 66 .357 magnum
revolver.The service ammunition will consist of six
(6)rounds of .357 magnum ammunition,to be carried
in the weapon,and twelve (12)rounds of .38 special
ammunition to be carried in the prescribed uniform
cartridge case.
1.(Optional)Apache Junction Police Department certified
personnel are authorized to carry on -duty at their
option,the following semi -automatic handguns:
a.Smith and Wesson,all Model 39 and 59 series.
b.Barretta,Model 92SB and 92F.
c.Sig Sauer,P225,P226.
2.All semi -auto handguns will be double action
only and have an internal decocking function.
3.The semi -automatic handguns shall be 9 MM caliber
using Departmental issued or approved ammunition.
4.The holster shall be a thumb -break or security front
break model.Both models must have an over the hammer
retaining strap.
5.Two magazines shall be carried on the duty belt.Each
pouch must have a flap to secure the magazine in it's
individual pouch.

6.Initial training for semi -auto use consists of 4 hours
of classroom and 4 hours of range training unless
received by the basic police academy or waived by the
Rangemaster.
7.All Equipment,including weapon, holster, magazines
and magazine pouches must be purchased by the individual
officer. Brand names and models must be approved by the
Department. Equipment must also be inspected by the
Rangemaster prior to being placed into service.
8.Other semi -automatic handguns may be approved for
on -duty use on an individual basis as approved by the
Rangemaster and the Chief of Police.
B.Plain Clothes Officers (on duty) - will carry:
1.A department issued revolver or a personally owned
Colt or Smith & Wesson revolver, .357 magnum or
38 special, 2" - 4" barrel, blue steel, nickel, or
stainless steel.Department issued ammunition will
be utilized in the weapon.
a. (Optional) Plain Clothes on duty may carry a
semi -automatic handgun in accordance with
Policy 5.87A1.
2 .When the weapon is worn exposed, it will be
carried in a conservatively styled belt holster
with a retaining strap, right or left hand draw.
3.Exceptions to this order can be mde by a supervisor
thereby permitting an officer to go unarmed while
on duty.
SECTION II REPEALING ANY CONFLICTING PROVISIONS
All ordinances and parts of ordinances in conflict with the
provisions of this ordinance or any part of the code adopted herein
by reference are hereby repealed.
SECTION III PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY
If any section, subsection, sentence, phrase, clause or portion of
this ordinance or any part of the code adopted herein by reference is, for
any reason, held to be invalid or unconstitutional by the decision of any
court of competent jurisdiction, such decision shall not affect the
validity of the remaining portions thereof.
