HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 80-35RESOLUTION NO.80-35 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF APACHE JUNCTION,ARIZONA,REQUESTING THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO PERFORM A TRAFFIC STUDY TO CONSIDER A REDUCTION IN SPEED AND INSTALLATION OF TRAFFIC SIGNALS ALONG U.S.HIGHWAY 60 AND STATE ROUTE 88 WITHIN THE CITY LIMITS OF APACHE JUNCTION. WHEREAS,the existing state highways were designed for speeds i n excess of 55 miles per hours;and WHEREAS,the. City of Apache Junction has experienced substantial growth over the last several years;and WHEREAS,approximately 23,000 vehicles per day pass through the intersection of U.S.60 and State Route 88,based upon 1978 values from the State Transportation Planning Division;and WHEREAS,the Arizona Department of Transportation has the responsibility and liability for these public roads;and WHEREAS,the City Council of the City of Apache Junction believed some interim solution must be available to make travel through and across the State highways safer for both the pedestrian and the motoring traffic; NOW,THEREFORE,be i t resolved by the Mayor and City Council of the City of Apache Junction,that the Arizona Department of Transportation be requested to perform traffic studies to ascertain the following modifications or installations can be effected: A.Speed Along U.S.60 1.Retain 55 mph from Goldfield Road to Tommahawk Road. 2.Reduce speed from 55 mph to 45 mph from Tommahawk Road to Idaho Road. 3.Reduce speed from 45 mph to 35 mph from Idaho Road to Meridian Road. B.Traffic Signal - -U.S.60 1.Install traffic signals at the intersection of U.S.60 and Idaho Road. C.Speed Along S.R.88 1.Reduce speed from 50 mph to 35 mph between Idaho Road and Superstition Drive. D.Traffic Signal - -S.R.88 1.Install traffic signals at the intersection of Superstition Drive and S.R.88.
