A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF APACHE JUNCTION,ARIZONA,EXPRESSING THE CITY INTEREST
TO APPLY BY A RECREATION AND PUBLIC PURPOSES APPLICATION
FOR CERTAIN BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT LANDS CONTIGUOUS TO
THE CITY LIMITS.
WHEREAS,the Bureau of Land Management has certain lands con-
tiguous to the city of Apache Junction,Arizona,described as:
the south half of the southeast quarter of the northeast
quarter of Section 9,Township 1 South,Range 8 East,
Gila and Salt River Base and Meridian,and the south
half of said Section 9,except that portion described as
follows:
Beginning at the southwest corner of said Section 9 and
proceeding north along the west line of said Section 9 a
distance of 2027.59',thence S500 23'22"E 3180.19'to
the south line of said section,thence west along said
south line 2450'to the southwest corner of said Section 9,
except the city would defer that portion of the subject area for an
approved application by the Apache Junction JayCees;and
WHEREAS,the Bureau of Land Management will consider Recreation
and Public Purposes Applications for local units of government such as
the city of Apache Junction,Arizona,when applicants have legitimate
needs for such lands;and
WHEREAS,the city of Apache Junction,Arizona,does not at
this time have a major recreation park;and
WHEREAS,cities should provide recreational facilities acces-
sible to all of its citizens and the subject site i s equally accessible
to all persons due to location and terrain considerations;and
WHEREAS,Apache Junction has a western culture and history to
which its citizens are expressing a desire to continue such by the ex-
pression of their various lifestyles,including their recreational
activities;and
WHEREAS,there i s a need for a variety of recreational facili-
ties to serve all age groups and interest and the subject property would
provide an area to serve such an opportunity;and
WHEREAS,certain areas are contiguous to proposed flood control
areas and certain areas are possibly subject to flooding,therefore,
recreational development would provide an orderly transition from the
subject flood structures as well as preserve flood -prone areas i n open
space all i n accordance with the goals of the Flood Disaster Protection
Act of 1973;and
WHEREAS,i t i s the intention of the city to provide its
citizens a balanced recreation program requiring the intensive manage-
ment upon development of park lands;
NOW THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and City Council
of the City of Apache Junction, Arizona,that the City Council hereby
expresses to the Bureau of Land Management,U.S.Department of the
Interior,its interest and intention to file a Recreation and Public
Purposes application for the above described property no later than
March 31,1982;and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Manager i s directed to
review and prepare a recommended application to accomplish the goal of
this resolution i n a timely manner;and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be and hereby i s
authorized and directed to send certified copies of the resolution to
the Governor of the State,the Arizona State Land Commissioner,the
Phoenix District Office of the Bureau of Land Management,and other
appropriate officials.
