A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
APACHE JUNCTION,FINAL AND MARICOPA COUNTIES,ARIZONA,
OPPOSING PROPOSED LEGISLATION TO FINANCE PRISON CONSTRUCTION
FROM FUNDS HISTORICALLY ALLOCATED TO THE ARIZONA PEACE
OFFICERS'TRAINING FUND.
WHEREAS,the State of Arizona mandatorily requires peace officers
to meet minimum standards for training i n State sponsored facilities;and
WHEREAS,this training has considerably enhanced the proficiency
and professionalism of peace officers throughout the State i n general
and within the City of Apache Junction i n particular;and
WHEREAS,the Joint Legislative Committee on Corrections i s
entertaining the proposition to finance a bond issue to construct new
prison facilities by diverting funds historically used and originally
supported for the purpose of police officer training;
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and City Council of
the City of Apache Junction,Arizona,that the City of Apache Junction
go on record as opposing the use of traffic offense surcharge funds
to finance State prison construction programs at the expense of peace
officer training.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be sent to
Apache Junction's elected State Senators and Representatives,and to the
Governor of the State of Arizona,along with a request for their support
to defeat any legislation which cripples one facet of the criminal
justice system to heal another.
PASSED AND ADOPTED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF APACHE JUNCTION,ARIZONA,THIS 6TH DAY OF DECEMBER ,1983.
