HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 83-14RESOLUTION NO.83-14 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF APACHE JUNCTION,ARIZONA,SUPPORTING,ENDORSING, AND RECOMMENDING APPROVAL TO THE U.S.FOREST SERVICE OF A PROVISION IN THE "PROPOSED TONTO NATIONAL FOREST PLAN"TO PROVIDE SIXTY ACRES TO THE SUPERSTITION MOUNTAIN HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO ALLOW CONSTRUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE SUPERSTITION MOUNTAIN MUSEUM. WHEREAS,there exist a wealth of history,lore and tradition concerning the Superstition Mountain area;and WHEREAS,there are now only second generation persons surviving that knew individuals i n the historical era of the Superstitions,and with the passage of each generation of pioneers,the reconstruction of this history becomes more difficult;and WHEREAS,the Superstition Mountain Historical Society,an Internal Revenue Service tax exempt non-profit historical institution,has made great progress to collect,assemble and preserve much of this regional history and artifacts;and WHEREAS,the Superstition Mountain area has many natural amenities to which individuals are attracted to study and learn about the history of the region and its natural environment;and WHEREAS,the Superstition Mountain i s a designated "Wilderness Area" by the federal government for both historical and natural reasons;and WHEREAS,the greater Phoenix area i s a major tourist center i n the U.S. Southwest Region and also has a population in excess of 1,602,800 permanent persons i n the Phoenix Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area,many who would be attracted to a museum of historical concern;and WHEREAS,the U.S.Forest Service has published for public comment the "Proposed Tonto National Forest Plan"and "Draft Environmental Impact Statement, Pronosed Tonto National Forest Plan,"including certain maps and attachments there- to;and WHEREAS,the said proposed "Plan"does contain a provision for sixty (60) acres under Special Use Permit to the Superstition Mountain Historical Society for the development of Superstition Mountain Museum;and WHEREAS,such a museum would be of wide -spread general and educational interest to a local,regional and national audience;and WHEREAS,the proposal to create said museum would have direct access from State Route 88,thereby not creating traffic congestion;and WHEREAS,the proposal to create said museum has been approved as meeting U.S.Forest Service standards and would not be detrimental to the natural environ- ment;and WHEREAS,the development would be constructed in character with historical patterns and practices;and NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and City Council of the City of Apache Junction,Arizona,supporting,endorsing,and recommending approval to the U.S.Forest Service of a provision i n the "Proposed Tonto National Forest Plan" to provide sixty acres to the Superstition Mountain Historical Society to allow construction and development of the Superstition Mountain Museum. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution are to be sent by the City Clerk to the U.S.Forest Service (Phoenix Office),President RESOLUTION NO.83-14 PAGE TWO Ronald Reagan,U.S.Secretary of Agriculture John R.Block,U.S.Senate and House of Representatives delegation from Arizona,Governor Bruce Babbitt,Attorney General Bob Corbin,Arizona delegates and Senator representing the Apache Junction area,and the Superstition Mountain Historical Society.
