A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
APACHE JUNCTION,ARIZONA,SUPPORTING DIRECT DAILY TRAIN
SERVICE ON THE SOUTHWEST LIMITED BETWEEN MIDWESTERN CITIES
AND CITIES THROUGHOUT THE STATE OF ARIZONA.
WHEREAS,Southern Arizona,including the East Valley area
of which Apache Junction i s a part,i s one of the
fastest growing regions i n the United States;and
WHEREAS,railroad passenger service i n surrounding areas i s
less than adequate and non-existent within Apache
Junction;and
WHEREAS,a strong railroad link i s needed to support the
travel needs of the East Valley's rapidly
expanding industrial base,educational community,
tourist trade and residential population;and
WHEREAS,increased access to the East Valley can directly
benefit Apache Junction by providing an alternate
means of travel to our City;and
WHEREAS,the .Southwest Limited can assist i n meeting the
growth and transportation needs of our city by
providing .a vital link to cities such as Flagstaff,
Albuquerque,Kansas City and Chicago;
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF APACHE JUNCTION,ARIZONA,THAT AGREEMENTS
SHOULD BE MADE BETWEEN CONGRESS AND THE AMTRAK SYSTEM TO
INSTITUTE DAILY TRAIN SERVICE ON THE SOUTHWEST LIMITED
BETWEEN MIDWESTERN CITIES AND CITIES THROUGHOUT THE STATE
OF ARIZONA.
PASSED AND ADOPTED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF APACHE JUNCTION,ARIZONA,THIS 17TH DAY OF
JANUARY ,1984.
