HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 87-47RESOLUTION NO.87-47 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF APACHE JUNCTION,ARIZONA,REQUESTING THE STATE TRANSPOR- TATION BOARD AND THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO MAINTAIN THE PRESENT DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE FOR THE SUPERSTITION FREEWAY. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF APACHE JUNCTION,ARIZONA,AS FOLLOWS: WHEREAS,since the election of our first mayor and council in 1979, the City of Apache Junction has been actively pursuing the extension o f the Superstition Freeway within the city limits and Pinal County;and WHEREAS,many public meetings and public hearings have been held within the Apache Junction area to obtain citizen input on the pro- posed design and construction of the Superstition Freeway;and WHEREAS,Apache Junction area residents,business owners and elected officials,are grateful to Tudor Engineering,the State Transportation Board and the Arizona Department of Trans- portation for providing for input and incorporating many of the public comments and suggestions into the design plan;and WHEREAS,recently the residents and public officials of Apache Junction once again showed their willingness to work with state highway officials by endorsing the delayed extension of the freeway from Power Road in order to reduce costs by $15 million dollars and simultaneously construct three segments;and WHEREAS,i t is vital to the welfare of our citizens and visitors that an adequate and safe transportation system be provided;and WHEREAS,in our continuing efforts to plan for the extension of the Superstition Freeway through Apache Junction,tax increases have been levied with the stipulation that these funds be used to construct and improve freeway access roads to in- clude the acquisition of right-of-way where necessary; that major intersections be improved to accommodate traffic exiting and entering the freeway;and that intersections be made safe by signalization; NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and City Council of the City of Apache Junction,Arizona,that the State Transportation Board and the Arizona Department of Transportation be officially requested to continue with the present design and construction schedule for the Superstition Freeway,and that serious consideration be given to the RESOLUTION NO.87-47 PAGE ONE OF TWO present lack of adequate and safe transportation within the City of Apache Junction as well as the serious and devastating economic impact that additional delays in the completion of the Superstition Freeway would cause not only for Apache Junction,but for cities and towns to our east such as Globe,Superior,Miami and Florence. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Apache Junction residents,members of the business community,local elected and appointed officials,the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce,the Pinal County Board of Supervisors,the elected officials of our sister cities to the east, and all those having to drive the Apache Trail without benefit of a freeway system,petition the State Transportation Board and the Arizona Department of Transportation to maintain their current course of action on design and completion of the Superstition Freeway.
