HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 87-07RESOLUTION NO.87-07 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF APACHE JUNCTION,ARIZONA,PROTESTING THE ENDANGERMENT OF THE PUBLIC'S HEALTH,SAFETY AND WELFARE CAUSED BY THE DUMPING OF CONTAMINATED SOILS BY METAL REFINERS LTD.OF MESA AS AUTHORIZED BY THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES. WHEREAS,Apache Junction's residents and their neighbors enjoy a relaxed,western life style surrounded by the natural beauty of the desert and the majesty of the Super- stition Mountains;and WHEREAS,area residents strive to protect their lifestyle and to maintain an environment which i s free of chemical pollutants,smog and contaminated waste;and WHEREAS,the dumping of 1500 tons of soils foreign to Apache Junction containing high levels of lead and cyanide, mine tailings,scrap products from copper sulfate operations and other questionable materials has threatened the water supply as well as the residential and recreational properties of our citizens;and WHEREAS,the neglectful manner in which this dumping operation was approved and the continued existence of the materials on the site raises serious doubt about the ability of the Arizona Department of Health Services to safeguard the health and welfare of all citizens in a fair and equitable manner; NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and City Council of the City of Apache Junction,Arizona,that the Arizona Department of Health Services be requested to assume the responsibility for their error i n judgement and that they begin the immediate removal of all contaminated soil and scrap materials dumped by Metal Refiners Ltd.and that they further certify to area residents and city officials that all such contaminents have been removed from the site.
