A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
APACHE JUNCTION,ARIZONA,ENDORSING THE SERVICE PROVIDED
TO THE COMMUNITY THROUGH THE LOCAL HEAD START PROGRAM AND
REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES TO
MAKE AVAILABLE ADDITIONAL FUNDS TO MEET THE NEEDS OF
THE CHILDREN SERVED BY THE PROGRAMS.
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
APACHE JUNCTION,ARIZONA,AS FOLLOWS:
WHEREAS,Head Start is a comprehensive early childhood development
program designed to serve pre-school children from economically and/or
socially deprived families by providing experiences and environment to
assist in the development of skills and attitudes necessary for successful
school and community life;and
WHEREAS,Head Start provides medical,dental,and mental health
services for the children enrolled in the program,and also works directly
with the parents,involving them in the total program and helping them
develop activities for themselves so that entire families are benefited;and
WHEREAS,the local Head Start program currently serves 320 local
children with a waiting list of an additional 290 children for which they
have no funding with which to provide additional services;
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and City Council of the
City of Apache Junction,Arizona,that the local Head Start program be com-
mended for their efforts on behalf of the children of Apache Junction and
that the Department of Health and Human Services be requested to investigate
the possibility of making additional funds available to the Apache Junction
Head Start program so that services can be provided to any children of the
community who meet the criteria for participation on the program.

APACHE JUNCTION,ARIZONA,THIS 18TH DAY OF OCTOBER,1988.
