HomeMy WebLinkAbout1982-11-19 City Council Special MinutesCITY COUNCIL SPECIAL MEETING NOVEMBER 19,1982 A special meeting of the City Council of the City of Apache Junction, Arizona,was held on November 19,1982, at the Apache Junction City Council Chambers pursuant to the notice required by law. CALL TO ORDER Mayor Clarke called the meeting to order at 7:09 p.m. INVOCATION Councilman Eidson led the Invocation. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Councilman Hudson led the Pledge of Allegiance. Navajo Road Apache Junction,Arizona 85220 CALL TO THE PUBLIC Mr.Lawrence Lepic,202 N.Meridian Drive,#64, Apache Junction,Arizona, addressed the Council,explaining the difference that an airport would make to Apache Junction and that it would create industry which the city needs to grow and become more prosperous,stating that only a few individuals are Councilman Steelsmith explainedthatthe Arizona Water Company is requesting a rate increase,for which the Arizona Corporation Commission is holding a hearing,and i t has been requested that the City of Apache Junction act as an intervener at thehearing.He also stated that i t had been suggested that the city purchase a water company. Councilman Hudson expressed the present move that citizens from different districts should run for Corporation Commission to give representation from different areas. City Attorney Arnold Hirsch statedthatbypassingaresolutionexpressing the wish to become an intervener the city is performing their legal obligation. City Manager Tuvell informed the Council that several citizens have asked i f this indicates that the city objects to the rate increase,and stated that this simply gives the city an opportunity to participate in the hearing on the city's behalf since they are also a water user. Councilman Steelsmith MOVED THAT BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF APACHE JUNCTION, ARIZONA,THAT RESOLUTION NO.82-68,A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF APACHE JUNCTION, PINAL COUNTY,ARIZONA,REQUESTING INTERVENER STATUS FROM THE ARIZONA CORPORATION COMMISSION IN THE MATTER OF ARIZONA WATER COMPANY,AN ARIZONA CORPORATION,AND THE GRANTING OF A LATE FILED PETITION, BE AND HEREBY IS APPROVED. Vice Mayor Hill seconded the motion. VOTE:Unanimous The motion carried. Mayor Clarke stated that by becoming anintervener,the city is performing what is expected of it. APPOINTMENTS TO A SPECIAL COMMITTEE TO STUDY ANNEXATION )Director of Planning Joe Gero suggestedpossibleareasforannexation,and that the committee study annexation in general instead of specific areas. Councilman Damiano, Councilman Hudson, and Councilman Eidson discussed different areas for possiblities of annexation. Mr.George Baljo,1070 E.Navajo,ApacheJunction,Arizona,suggested that the city annex land to the south,to Baseline before Mesa does,in order to protect our city in the area of the Superstition Freeway corrider. Councilman Eidson MOVED THAT BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF APACHE JUNCTION, ARIZONA, THAT THE FOLLOWING INDIVIDUALS BE APPOINTED TO A SPECIAL COMMITTEE TO STUDY ANNEXATIONS:COUNCILMAN EIDSON, ROSS GREVES,EARL LAABS,ROGER SHORT,GEORGE BALJO,AND GEORGE LITTLE. Councilman Hudson seconded the motion. VOTE:Unanimous The motion carried.
